Dr. Carlos Puig has been performing hair restoration surgery since 1973 — back when it barely existed as its own medical specialty. He helped build the standards the entire field now follows: he's a founding member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, and his fellow surgeons have twice elected him to lead the profession, as President of both the ISHRS and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. In 2012, the ISHRS gave him its highest honor, the Golden Follicle Award, for a lifetime of contributions to the field. None of that changes how he practices day to day, though — he still performs every single procedure himself, personally.
HIS STORY
Dr. Puig started doing hair transplants almost by accident — a part-time job during his years as an Army physician that turned into a lifelong passion. That was over fifty years ago. Since then, he hasn't just practiced hair restoration surgery — he's helped shape it into the respected medical specialty it is today. He was there at the founding of the field's professional society, helped write the exam and training standards other hair restoration surgeons are now held to, and has trained the next generation of surgeons himself as director of his own fellowship training program.

Dr. Puig has spent much of his career specifically studying and teaching on that exact idea: long-term treatment planning in hair restoration surgery, not just short-term results. He's also applied Continuous Quality Improvement and Six Sigma principles — the same rigorous, consistency-focused methods used in fields where "close enough" isn't good enough — to his own practice for over 25 years. The goal isn't just hair that looks good in the first photos. It's a hairline that still looks natural, and still holds up, five, ten, fifteen years from now.

Dr. Joshua Hays, MD
Dr. Hays completed PHRC's physician fellowship training program under Dr. Puig, training in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) techniques. He continues to work alongside Dr. Puig today, performing select procedures as part of the PHRC team. He is a board-certified physician and an associate member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
